Just do your job!

Yet again, Kentucky and one of its misguided elected officials, has perpetuated the widely held stereotype that we are numbskull, bible beating  bigots with exclusionary mindsets.  There is a County Clerk in Rowan County, KY that has refused to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples.  There have been protests from both sides of the fence.  Religious and conservative leaders are taking up camp in her defense, blatantly stating that there should be more god in public policy and political decisions.  And fairness and civil rights positions have been stated, that her refusal to do this is biased and discriminatory.

This clerk, Kim Davis, is supposedly a born again Christian. She is defying the law, as set forth by the Supreme Court, based solely on her religious beliefs.  She claims she prayed and fasted before making her decision, that god gave her guidance, although I’m not sure what purpose fasting has in this equation.  She says she believes that gods “holy word” is that marraige is “the union between a man and a woman”.  I suppose this sanctity for marraige is in spirit only for Ms Davis, as she’s been married 4 times, twice to the same man, with 3 divorces thrown in.  I see that marraige on her terms has’nt really worked out well for her.  Maybe by the fifth or sixth one she will be doing it the way god wants her too.

I’m not writing this to spark a debate.  I don’t give two shits about her religious beliefs, or anyone else’s for that matter.  But there is a reason the forefathers of this country separated church and state.  The law is the law.  If you are an elected official, your decisions should be made based on the law, not your personal beliefs.  If she doesn’t want to issue licenses to these couples and do the job she was elected to do, she should resign.  End of story.

I realize there are likely people who may read this who agree with her.  That marraige should be between a man and a woman only.  And that’s perfectly fine.  I dont want anyone telling me my beliefs and opinions are wrong or unwelcome.  So I don’t begrudge someone else their opinion.   But, as Ms Davis’ marital history proves, that doesn’t always protect this so-called “sanctity” of marraige.  I guess it’s ok for people to marry and divorce as much as they want to, to hike their legs on this “sanctified” institution at will.  To make a mockery of vows, vows taken in front of their god.  That’s all fine and dandy, so long as its a man and a woman?  God forbid two people who love each other, and commit to one another, be allowed to marry, if they’re the same sex.  And for that matter, this woman is not a policy maker and she has no rights as such in this case.  She is a county clerk.  She has people fill out the necessary paperwork then files it.  Thats it!  What does it matter to her? Are these assholes so convinced that they know exactly what god will approve of that they deem their opinions the only ones that matter?

To me, these people are simply bigots who use god as their shield, hiding in plain sight, like wolves in sheeps clothing.  Dishing out discrimination and hatred while espousing that it goes agains gods will to allow this or that to happen.  Who made them judge and jury?  Especially as an elected public official.  It’s not up to these county clerks to determine who is able to marry who.  These people are elected pencil pushers.  Period!  The laws now say two men or two women are legally allowed to marry.  So, to Ms Davis, I say, “Do your fucking job or resign!”.

As I said, I’m not looking to debate this topic.  If you want to know my stance, I’ll tell you:  I’m in favor of allowing same-sex marraige.  The Supreme Court has stated clearly that it is law.  These county clerks are obligated to abide by the law.  Period!  If someone disagrees, fine.  But you’ll not convince me otherwise.  So don’t waste your breath trying.  And Ms Davis is allowed to have her opinion.  On her own time that is.  NOT when acting in the capacity of an elected official payed by the very taxpayers she’s trying to discriminate against.  Religious beliefs my ass!  Quit being a pseudo martyr and closet homophobe while hiding behind your bible.  Do your damn job or resign!

  1. That’s right. She doesn’t have to like it or believe it in. She has her own free time to express those thoughts and beliefs. But luckily church and state ARE separate and at work she must do her job and uphold the laws of her country, end of story.

  3. The right to swing your fist ends where my face begins. I can’t understand why she didn’t step down some time ago…I mean, several Hollywood examples come to mind who ruined the “sanctity of marriage” some time ago.

This has been a hot topic in the HR world, as you can imagine.

    • I know it. Just kills me when people spew hate while hiding behind “religion”. It’s not up to her to make this decision. The decision has been made, it’s legal, they can marry. Do your job! Simple as that! Against her beliefs? What a crock of shit! She’s anti-gay, that’s all!
