On this day, in 1998, The Drew Carey Show hosted some special guest appearances.  The episode, “In Ramada Da Vida”, centered on Carey and his buddies forming a band.  They scored a gig playing at a Ramada Inn, but then realized they’d need a lead guitarist.  Auditions ensued, with some huge names in rock making cameo appearances.  Joe Walsh cameo’d as “Ed”, and the list of potential band members there for try-outs included Slash, Joey Ramone, Rick Nielson, Jonny Lang, and Matthew Sweet.  I was never a huge fan of the show, necessarily, but this episode was worthy of a look simply due to the guest appearances. And the character Mimi was usually good for a few laughs.

Also on this day, in 1966, Cat Stevens released his first single, “I Love My Dog”.  The song went to no. 28 on the UK Singles Chart.  The album that contained the song, Matthew And Son, eventually reached no. 7 on the UK Album Chart.  This, of course, launched a great career of song-writing and songs that everyone knows.  Stevens eventually converted to Islam in 1977 and, in 1978, he changed his name to Yusuf Islam.  In 1979, he auctioned off all his guitars for charity and gave up music to focus on education.  He was MIA in the music world until he re-emerged with a new album, An Other Cup, in 2006.  Since, he has released two albums, Roadslinger in 2009 and Tell ‘Em I’m Gone in 2014.  He toured in support of his last album, the first time he’d toured since 1978.  He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014.

Songs of the day:

“Life Of Illusion” by Joe Walsh

“I Love My Dog” by Cat Stevens

“Civil War” by Guns N’ Roses

“If You Want My Love” by Cheap Trick

“I Wanna Be Sedated” by The Ramones

“We’re The Same” by Matthew Sweet

“Wander The World” (AOL Sessions) by Jonny Lang

“California Sun” by The Ramones

    • Ha! I had to break out the cd’s. I forget how awesome they were back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. As a young kid, I thought they were so edgy and brooding and cool. 😃
