On this day, in 1951, Gordon Sumner was born in Wallsend, Tyne & Wear, England.  Of course, he’s better known as Sting.  He’s an extremely talented artist, playing bass guitar, guitar, double bass, keyboards, and sax, in addition to being a vocalist and songwriter.  He’s well known as the lead-man for The Police, but embarked on a long solo career, leaving the band in 1983.  He performed solo for the first time at the fourth Amnesty International benefit in London in 1981.  The Police never formally broke up, but each agreed to participate in solo projects.  The bands’ final album, Synchronicity, was nominated for 5 Grammys, including Album of the Year.  The Police were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.  Sting’s first solo album was in 1985, The Dream of the Blue Turtles, and included the hits “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free” and “Fortress Around Your Heart”.  It was certified Triple Platinum within a year.  He’s continued his solo career through present day with hit after hit, awards nominations, and possibly even greater success than achieved while with The Police.  In 2007, The Police reunited for a year-long world-wide tour.

Sting is also a tireless philanthropist, something he initiated in 1981 with his participation in an Amnesty International benefit.  He participated in Band Aid, Live Aid, he’s long been associated with Amnesty International, he founded the Rainforest Foundation Fund.  He’s participated in Music For Montserrat, America: A Tribute To Heroes, helped raise funds for the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami relief, Songs For Tibet, Hope For Haiti, is a Patron of the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and participated in the Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together benefit.  And that’s just to name a few.

Sting has received 16 Grammy awards, 3 Brit Awards, and a Golden Globe.  He’s been nominated for 3 Academy Awards for Best Original Song.  He’s been inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2002.  He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2000.  He was made a Kennedy Center Honoree in 2014.  And as a member of The Police and as a solo artist, he has sold over 200 million records.

So, Happy Birthday, Gordon Sumner, aka Sting.  You’ve graced us all with amazing music and admirable amounts of humanitarian work.  Here’s to many more years of us music fans being rewarded with your genius.  And many more years of humans benefitting from your kind and giving soul.  Thanks for blessing us with your artistry and for paying your success forward.

    • That’s a great one too! Almost added it to the playlist. Too many good ones to list. They’re one of my favorites too. When I was in middle school, around the time they really came on the scene, I loved them. They were part of the soundtrack for my early teen years. His solo career has been off the charts good too. Talented dude. And a damn good human being on top of that.

  8. Did you know he said that he’s not leaving his 100s of millions to his kids?!? It was a few years ago but that he wanted them to make their own way in the world. I hope he’ll leave them some lol. But such a remarkable man who’s lived an extraordinary life. Oh and he and wife Trudy were both married years ago when they fell in love. While they absolutely regretted cheating, I think they have been together a few decades now.
