I’m in a mood today…a good one.  I’m feelin’ energetic and antsy, excited and ready to go.  We are packing the car and hittin’ the road this afternoon, and the days we leave for a trip are some of my favorites.  I’m working today, but in body only.  I tend to “check out” a few days prior to traveling, and today is no exception.

Our boys are on Fall Break this week and we are taking them to Washington, D.C.  I haven’t been since I was a kid and my wife hasn’t either.  We’ve waited to take the boys until we felt they were old enough to fully appreciate all that we will see, and to not bitch incessantly about the walking.  They’re very excited about this trip.  One wants to see the “museum that was in the movie”, being “Night At The Museum”, the Natural History Museum.  One is pumped for the Air And Space Museum.  The other wants to visit the Spy Museum.  One that we can all agree on is the Lincoln Memorial.  We live about 45 min. from Lincoln’s Birthplace in Knob Creek, KY and a National Park in Hodgenville, KY dedicated to Abe, and all three are badge-carrying Junior Rangers from numerous National Parks, including this one, having taken a test and an oath to become so.  So Abe is on the list of for-sure sites to see.

Truth be told, I’m as excited about this trip as they are.  Of course, I’m always ready for a road trip, regardless of destination.  But I’ve really been looking forward to this one since we began planning it.  I have my issues with government, politicians, and bureaucracy, and nothing epitomizes that clusterfuck like Washington.  But, as an American, D.C. is absolutely a must-see.  The Smithsonian, The Mall, the war memorials, Arlington Cemetary, etc.  It’s the place that contains the story of “us”, of a nation, however misguided and overbearing some of that history may have been.  Nonetheless, this trip will be so educational for these boys, and I’m so happy to enable that for them.

Yeah, I’ve been in a mood today.  Anxious, eager, frisky, and antsy.  I’m ready to roll, and ready for yet another adventure with my clan.  There’s no one else in the world I’d rather experience a trip with.  And I’ve always loved traveling with my wife.  We’ve been excellent running mates from the get go, and that’s not changed in 24 years.  The only thing that has changed, when staying in a hotel vs a house, is that we don’t get much “privacy” with the boys around.  That’s too bad, as our alone time has also always been a staple of our trips.  Oh well.  We’ll just have to get creative.  Still excited to be planning, packing, and plotting.

My songs of the day:

“Vulcan Death Grip” by The Ugly Americans

“Crave” by Gabe Dixon

“Born In The USA” by Bruce Springsteen

“Break Me Off Some” by John Mellancamp

“America” by Simon and Garfunkel

“I Feel Love (Every Million Miles)” by The Dead Weather

“Living In America” by James Brown

  1. That’s exciting 🙂 I brought my kids out this past summer to museums and such around my area. It was an adventure for me as I had never driven that far out before nor had I been to these places. So in that instance, I over rode fear. And don’t buy too many stickers! 😉

  8. DC is awesome. I grew up a few hours north of there so it was a frequent school trip once I hit HS. So much to see. American History and Natural History are my faves, as well as Baltimore’s aquarium.

    • I’ve been to Baltimore, but it’s been many years ago. Same with DC. Thought about doing Baltimore on this trip but won’t have time. Yeah, Natural History is my fave. Boys liked the Air and Space. We just aren’t gonna have time to do it all. Gonna do Fords Theatre in morning, that’s a new one to me. Spy Museum is possibility too.
