Born In A Small Town

On this date, in 1951, John Mellancamp was born in Seymour, IN.  He’s a talented musician, a super entertainer live, and an accomplished songwriter.  In fact, Johnny Cash once described him as “one of the 10 best songwriters in music”.

He was a staple of the 80’s and had a string of top-10 hits with such well-known songs as “Pink Houses”, “R.O.C.K. In The USA”, and “Jack And Diane” to name a few.  In fact, he’s achieved over 22 top-40 hits in the US over his career.  He’s been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, but only one once.  He was voted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fane in 2008.

He was a founding member of Farm Aid, along with Neil Young and Willie Nelson.  The organization continues its annual fund and awareness raising still to this day.  It has raised nearly $50 million dollars since its inception in 1995.  He’s been a long time political activist, criticizing presidents and public policy both openly and in his lyrics.  He’s openly protested farming policy, the Iraqi war, and bias against same-sex marraige.

One interesting side note was related to a concert he performed at Walter Reed Medical Center in 2007.  He originally planned a duet with Joan Baez on his song “Jim Crow”.  However, Army authorities denied her being able to play.  Their statement was that “she doesn’t fit here, period!”.  Presumably it’s because of her long-standing anti-war stance.  Mellancamp tried to sway that opinion and was baffled, going so far as to ask for a reason why. No real answer was provided.

His work from the 80’s garnered him fame and fortune, but as he’s progressed in years, so has his music.  He’s not the it-boy of pop radio anymore, but the depth of his lyrics and musical style are far more advanced, all the while maintaining that every-man persona, like he’s just a dude you can hang out with at the local bar.  He’s rough and tumble and his songwriting reflects that.  But his a-bit-rough-around-the-edges attitude belies a significant ability to story tell and compose.  I’ve seen him numerous times over the years and he is certainly on my list of favorites to see live.  If ever you have the opportunity, I highly recommend it.

Songs of the day:

“Days Of Farewell”

“Authority Song”

“Crumblin’ Down”

“Wild Night”

“What If I Came Knocking”

“Lawless Times”

“Your Life Is Now”

“Full Catastrophe”

“Paper And Fire”

“Play Guitar”
