Busy day!

Today is a busy day in music history, so I’ll throw out a few of the more interesting tidbits, and try to keep it brief.

On this date, in 1961, Decca Records released “Crazy” by Patsy Cline.  The song was composed by none other than Willie Nelson and originally pitched to Billy Walker, who turned it down.  It went to no. 2 on the Country charts in 1962, and launched Willie’s career as a songwriter and performer.  That’s an oops moment for Mr. Walker.

Today, in 1965, The Beatles recorded “Day Tripper” at Abbey Road Studios.  It only took 3 takes to set the music, and by the end of the day, the lyrics had been added to complete the song.

On this day, in 1967, Joan Baez and 123 others were arrested for blocking the entrance to an Armed Forces Induction Center in Oakland, CA.  In a related post of mine, Born In A Small Town, I made note of her being denied the chance to sing in a duet with John Mellancamp at Walter Reed Hospital in 2007.  I guess the military holds a grudge?

Today, in 1967, Leonard Chess, founder of Chess Records, died of a heart attack at age 52.  Chess Records was home to icons such as John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, Jimmy Reed, Sonny Boy Williamson, and The Flamingos.

And, on this date, in 2006, the famed CBGB Club in New York, closed its doors.  The venue was credited with discovering such iconic figures as Patti Smith, The Ramones, Blondie, and The Talking Heads, to name a few.  The original name was CBGB OMFUG, which stood for “Country, Bluegrass, Blues and Other Music For Uplifting Gormandizer’s”.  It was best known as a haven for Punk in the 70’s though.  When we were in NY/NJ for a Grateful Dead concert at The Meadowlands in 1992, we made a special trip to the city just to visit this historic site.  For music fans like us, it was a must see.  The site is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places as of 2013.

And on top of all that, these artists’ are celebrating another trip around the sun today:

1945- Roger Hawkins, drummer for The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section

1947- Bob Weir, guitarist for The Grateful Dead

1962- Michael Blazary (Flea), guitarist for The Red Hot Chili Peppers

1977- John Mayer

So, in honor of all that, my songs of the day are:

“Crazy” by Patsy Cline

“Day Tripper” by The Beatles

“Tupelo Blues” by John Lee Hooker

“I’m A Man” by Bo Diddley

“Gloria” by Patti Smith

“Take Me To The River” by The Talking Heads

“The Tide Is High” by Blondie

“Pinhead” by The Ramones

“Californication” by The Red Hot Chili Peppers

“Morning Dew” by The Grateful Dead
