High Tide or Low Tide

On this day, in 1969, Ben Harper was born in Pomona, CA.  He’s a soulful mix of rock, soul, blues, and reggae musically and is a talented songwriter.  He’s a gifted instrumentalist as well, playing guitar, lap steel guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, and piano.  I read that he attended his first concert at age 9 in 1978, a Bob Marley show with an encore with Marley and Peter Tosh, and that those two, along with the great Robert Johnson, were his biggest musical influences.

He’s been lauded with numerous awards, winning Grammy’s in 2005 for Best Pop Instrumental Performance and Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album and for Best Blues Album in 2014.  He was also awarded Rolling Stone (France) Artist of the Year in 2003.  That last award is notable, as he gained great popularity in Europe, Oceania, and Australia, the latter being where he credits his career being kick-started, long before gaining commercial success in the US.

He’s also notable for discovering talent and for producing other artists’ work.  He met Jack Johnson in 1999 and sent a demo of his work to his producer who then became Johnson’s producer.  He also produced Natalie Maine’s first solo album, “Mother”, in 2013.  He’s collaborated with numerous others too, such as The Blind Boys of Alabama, The Relentless 7, Vanessa da Mata, and Charlie Musselwhite.

In addition, he’s been a character actor in TV and movies, and was married to Laura Dern for a time.  He’s also politically and socially active, participating in No Nukes, Vote For Change, and Little Kids Rock, a program designed to promote music education in disadvantaged public schools.

He’s been one of my favorites for years and I’ve seen him live numerous times.  He usually plays in smaller, more intimate venues and is a terrific live performer.  So Happy B’day, Mr. Harper!  Can’t wait to see you again.

My songs of the day are:
