Catch of the day

I love being on the water, especially saltwater.  I’ve made that perfectly clear here.  We were up for it when Papa decided it was a good day to fish, unseasonably warm, near 90 and humid as hell, sun shining, light chop, tide comin’ in.  So we load up the gear and set out into the bay.  Between St. George Island and Little St. George Island is a pass into the bay they refer to as “The Cut” and the fishing is generally terrific.  Any number of schooling fish, and predatory fish looking for an easy snack, lurk around the deep channel.  Today though, the fish weren’t biting.  But what was caught was much more satisfying than a Drum, Redfish, or Grouper.  What was reeled in was smiling boys, proud Papa’s, fish stories, and laughs.  Their Papa is now 70 years old but acts like a kid when he’s with these boys.  And these boys are being taught the lessons and tales acquired from years of experience and seafaring.  These memories will be priceless to them, much more valuable than reeling in any fish.  So even though we didn’t catch a fish, the catch of the day is something they’ll take with them the rest of their lives.

My songs of the day are:

“Reminiscing” by Little River Band

“Barefoot Children” by Jimmy Buffet

“Raised Up Family” by James Taylor

“Only The Ocean” by Jack Johnson

“Riptide” by Vance Joy
