Paying it forward

In this season of giving, I was kind of inspired by this “calendar of Random Acts”.  It’s a pretty good idea, and I’m doing my best to participate.  Thus far, I’m doing pretty well.  I’ve done what’s on the dates daily, with the exception of the 5th, because I’m old and don’t have a teacher anymore, but I did bring my wife a cup of tea that morning before she got outta bed, so I’m gonna count that.

Now, generally speaking, I do the random kindness thing anyway.  And we’ve gone out of our way to impart this mindset onto our boys as well.  In fact, this weekend we went shopping and wrapped bags of gifts for three of their fellow students who are in need, and they proudly dropped them off to the resource office at school this morning. This sort of caring and giving is important to us daily.

But during this time of year, it’s doubly important, to us at least.  The thought of an elderly neighbor being without a meal, the child who sits next to my son not having a coat to wear or a toy to unwrap.  The thought of a soldier away from his or her family.  All that, and many more stories, are heartbreaking, especially during the holidays.  So this calendar is a good way to be cognizant of what this time of year should be about.  Not close-out deals, piles of presents, mad dashes to four different stores.  It should be about kindness, caring, peace, and love.  And if you’re fortunate enough to be fortunate, sharing the wealth a little bit should be a priority.  Someone you know may just need the help.

So, for the 7th, I need to tell a silly joke to make someone laugh.  Here goes:

What does a weight conscious frog drink?

Diet Croak

A salesman is having a meeting with Bob Peters, a potential client.  Mr. Peters requested that they meet for lunch but he needed a haircut first.  The salesman says he’d be happy to meet him at the barber shop as it was on his way.  When’re salesman arrives at the barber, he opens the door, looks around, then says, “Bob Peters in here?”  The barber looks up and responds, “Nope, just cut hair and shaves.”

Silly enough?  Hope someone who needed a chuckle got one from these two jokes provided me by my 10 year-old goofball.

My songs of the day are:

“Fortunate Fool” by Jack Johnson

“People Are People” by Depeche Mode

“Hand It Over” by Keb’ Mo’

“Beds Are Burning” by Midnight Oil

“Under The Bridge” by Red Hot Chili Peppers

  4. I was whining in my journal yesterday that everyone’s “niceness” seems to come with an ulterior motive. Thanks for interrupting my self-pity with this post. 🙂

I thought this was a pretty great idea so I thought I would pay it forward by passing it along. My little girl and I will make up some hug coupons today. What can be more cuter than that? And here is silly joke contribution:
    Why do bicycles fall over?
    Because they are two tired!!

  6. Amazing idea! 🙂 I think Christmas Day should have “let someone win at a board game”- I personally couldn’t do that though!

  9. Great idea. The calendar should cover 365 days though. Then we might get a better world eventually:)
One town in Sweden had a meet Santa day where children left some of their toys to Santa. He will give them to children that doesn’t have so much toys. I thought that was a great idea 🙂

  12. Oh, songs of the day. What a wonderful idea. I love Keb Moe. I will give it a listen. Thanks for your post. It’s good to be mindful of the fortune we enjoy that others don’t and to share the abundance we have. I’m watching A Christmas Carol right now, how fitting! Hope yours is jolly!

    • I didn’t find it myself. I’m not on Facebook. Well, I actually do have a Facebook account, but I checked it so infrequently that I forgot my login and password! Oops! 😃
