More useless info

Well, as historical dates go, this was a busy day in the timeline of music.  There is so much to choose from, I’ve decided to not focus on just one item.  So, without further adieu, here are some short snippets of useless information:

On this date, in 1928, legendary bluesman Bo Diddley was born Elias Otha Bates in McComb, MS.  Still love his role as the pawn shop owner in Trading Places.

On this date, in 1946, rocker, writer, and power-to-the-people champion Patti Smith was born in Chicago, IL.  She’s a bad-ass!

On this date, in 1947, ELO frontman Jeff Lynne was born in Shard End, Birmingham, England.  He has a new album out right now, by the way.  It’s pretty dang good too.

Some chart toppers and milestones from this date include:

1967, The Beatles’ “Hello Goodbye” became The Fab Four’s 15th no. 1 single on the US charts.

1969, Peter, Paul, and Mary’s “Leaving On A Jet Plane”, written by John Denver, is certified Gold.

And, this is for you Anna, in 1976, ABBA’s Greatest Hits is certified Gold.

There were also a few significant recordings from this date.  Among those were:

1966, The Beatles recorded “Penny Lane”.

1968, Frank Sinatra recorded “My Way”

And, in 1974, Uncle Bob Dylan was prolific, recording “Tangled Up In Blue”, “Lily, Rosemary, and The Jack of Hearts”, and “If You See Her, Say Hello”.

On this date, in 1978, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer announced they were breaking up.

And, in one final, and bizarre note, George Harrison was nearly killed by an intruder at his home.  On this date, in 1999, a man named Michael Abram broke in and attacked Harrison, stabbing him in the chest and collapsing a lung.  The attack was ended when his wife, Olivia, fought Abram off with a fire poker and a lamp.

Whew, that’s a bunch of useless knowledge!  I’m exhausted just writing it.  Most I’d deem worthy of further investigation, but I’ll spare y’all the minute details and simply close with my songs of the day:

“Hello Goodbye” by The Beatles

“Tangled Up In Blue” by Bob Dylan

“Evil Woman” by ELO

“I’m A Man” by Bo Diddley

“Leaving On A Jet Plane” by Peter, Paul, and Mary

“Dancing Barefoot” by Patti Smith

“What A Lucky Man” by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer

“Knowing Me Knowing You” by ABBA

“My Way” by Frank Sinatra

“Got My Mind Set On You” by George Harrison
