If Only

Today would’ve been George Harrison’s 73rd birthday.  I’d made a post about The Quiet One on the anniversary of his death,  Inside A Cloud, which happened back in 2001, so I won’t go into another long diatribe about how fucking awesome he was, how little credit he garnered as a songwriter  as a Beatle, or how great a human being he was.  I’ll just leave it at this: we miss you, and can’t help but wonder what music and performances we’d have been blessed with if you were still making your mortal trips around the sun.

On a couple of other side-notes, on this date, in 1992, James Brown was given a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award.  And why not?  The Godfather of Soul?  The Hardest Working Man in Show Business?

Bet your ass he deserved this one!

And, on this date, in 1998, the great Bo Diddley and the unmistakable Roy Orbison were given Lifetime Achievement Grammy Awards.  If you love the blues, there’s plenty of Bo Diddley in your collection.  I can’t help picture him as the pawn shop owner in Trading Places, but the man is a legend in the guitar world.

And what can you say about Mr. Orbison?

Country legend, rock-a-billy forefather, and a Traveling Wilbury, along with the aforementioned Mr. Harrison.

When one hears his voice, it is immediately identifiable.

So, in honor of the unsung Beatle, The Godfather of Soul, a blues master, and an immortal, my songs of the day are:

“I’m A Man” by Bo Diddley

“While My Guitar Gently Weeps” by The Beatles

“Call Me Superbad” by James Brown

“It’s Alright” by The Traveling Wilbury’s

“Hey, Bo Diddley” by Bo Diddley

“Taxman” by The Beatles

“Only The Lonely” by Roy Orbison

“Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” by James Brown

“Savoy Truffle” by The Beatles

“Last Night” by The Traveling Wilbury’s

  1. There’s a concert this weekend on TV, although I’m in the lurch as far as channel and title. It’s commemorating George’s birthday. Sometimes those lifetime achievement awards are a way for those awards shows to say mea culpa for not recognizing them earlier. Like Hitchcock never receiving Best Director. Such a shame.

  2. Nice one, I’m sorry we lost him so soon. I hadn’t heard about the concert on TV, but Georgefest comes out on DVD tomorrow, I’m going to check my Listings now!

  5. Great shouts. As well as most of these, something tells me I’ll be Learning to Fly at some point tonight too 🙂

  6. Yes, George was overshadowed by Paul and John, but you’re right…he was gigantic in his own right. And James Brown…there isn’t enough space to document just how foundational that man was to music, not just R&B. Great list and songs too.
