Thanks so much!

I do this blog for myself, for my own reasons, and, I suppose, I’m kinda selfish about it.  Though I have little interest in gaining any sort of recognition from what I put out there, I have found that my favorite part is the interactions I have with those of you whom read my nonsense.  I don’t necessarily relish getting awards, of any kind, but I do so appreciate when one of y’all think enough about my stuff that you nominate me for something.  To me, it means I’ve connected with someone and that something I’ve said or posted about was valued.  Of course that makes me feel pretty good.

This award is the Liebster Award:

I’ve gotten one of these a time or two, and I enjoy taking part.  The line of questioning is usually pretty fun, and this time is no different.  This nomination comes from my relatively new friend, nivs24.  If you haven’t checked her site out, I highly recommend it.  Terrific photography and writing, and she’s awesome with regards to comments and responding to comments.  So, what are you waiting for?  Go introduce yourself!

Now, as with most things in life, there are some rules.  They generally aren’t my favorite things, but hey, I’m just playing so I guess I’ll abide.

The rules are:

  1. Post a pic of the award
  2. Answer the 11 questions posed
  3. Provide 11 random facts about myself
  4. Nominate 5-11 fellow bloggers

Here are nivs questions for me:

How did you come up with a name for your blog?

Well, I made a post about this very thing, Birth of an SOB, back in October.  Feel free to check that one out, but the gist is that my wife and I were married on a beach in 1996.  That day is what I feel is my re-birth, my new beginning.  Thus, sonofabeach96 came to mind.  Plus, I’m a beach bum at heart, so it fit quite well.  I also have the ability to be an SOB, but I try to reign that in as best as I can.  🙂

Do you change the WordPress theme of your blog?

Nope, mine has been the same since inception, in June of last year.

Describe the inspiration behind the topics you blog about.

Whatever comes to mind on a given day.  Lots about music, lots and lots of photography, with a bunch of personal matters mixed in.  It’s really not an agenda based thing, I just speak of any and all things that are on my mind at the time.

If you could choose one celebrity to have dinner with, who would it be and why?

A year or two ago, my answer would’ve been Robin Williams, simply because he was fun, funny, witty, and interesting.  Not sure who I’d pick at this point, but I guess I’ll go with Robert Plant.  Can you imagine the stories?  Front man for the greatest rock band ever (and its not even close)?  I’d sit and talk with him for hours.  A close-second option would be Paul McCartney, just because he’s Paul friggin’ McCartney!

Tea or coffee? Cat or dog? PC or Mac? Day or night?

Ok, let me run down this list in order: coffee (but I do love sweet tea), dog (but we do have 3 cats), PC (but I much prefer just using my iPad), and, this is easy, night (but I do love morning solitude and sunrises, if I can drag my ass outta bed in time).

Do you engage on other social media platforms?  If yes, which one has worked for you?

Nope.  This site is my one and only foray into social media, and I was uber reluctant to even do this.

Name a few websites (not blogs) you like to visit.

University of Louisville Scout Forum, Ocracoke Island Realty, The Wall Street Journal, Music Calendar, WFPK, National Geographic, and The Smithsonian

What is the last book you read?  Did you like it?

I recently got around to finishing a book sent to me by a fellow blogger friend, named Lottery by Patricia Wood.  I enjoyed it very much.  I have an Autistic son and the lead character in the book is special needs, and the story is told through his eyes.

What camera do you shoot with?

Well, I use a bunch.  My go-to is a Nikon D5000.  It’s my baby.  My iPhone gets plenty of use simply because it’s always on me.  I use a Leica Medium Format at times as well, but it’s a bit clunky, so when I do use it, it’s a planned thing.  And I have several point and shoots, all Nikon, that have somehow migrated into my boys’ possession over the years.

Which is your favorite season and why?

Oh, this is easy:  Summer!!!  Why?  That’s not a serious question, right?  Sand, surf, sun, suds, picnics, boats, water, water, and more water.  Cookouts, music festivals, daylight until 9:00pm, convertibles, vacations, etc, etc.  And all while wearing short sleeves, or no shirt, shorts, and usually no shoes.  Summer is perfect!

If you could paint anything, what would you paint?

Well, my wife would likely volunteer “Our house” as the answer to this, but I’ll say abstracts.  I’m a huge fan of Dali, and to be able to capture emotions and experience with that kind of minds eye would be fantabulous!

Ok, so, for 11 random facts about me:

  1. I have attended well over a thousand concerts.
  2. I nearly paralyzed myself drunk-diving into a pool while on spring break in South Padre.
  3. I’m a loner, even though I’m rarely alone now.
  4. I love photography.
  5. I’m a city boy by birth, but now live on a farm.
  6. I drive my cars until they die, even though we could buy a new one at any time.  Car payments are the biggest waste of money on the planet.
  7. I love flea markets, antique malls, yard sales, and auctions.
  8. Our 20th anniversary is in June.
  9. I bungee jumped off a bridge in Idaho once.
  10. My drug is whitewater kayaking.
  11. I think New Orleans is the best city in the US.

There ya have it.  As is my usual course of action with these, I will not be nominating anyone in particular.  You all are terrific and deserving of award recognition, so I’m giving it to y’all.  Feel free to answer the questions posed by nivs, and I’d like to thank her again for the recognition.  It’s greatly appreciated.  🙂

  9. I’m with ya on most of your answers! Bring on Summer, flea markets and auctions! I’ve spent a lot of time in South Padre, and we love kayaking…but I’ve never been whitewater kayaking. And yes, photography but my Nikon D60 has nothing on yours!

    • Equipment isn’t what makes a good photograph. I love my cameras, but I think I probably use my phone more than anything, just because I always have it on me. Only been to Padre the one time. Had a fantastic time, Matamoros was unreal. I was MUCH younger and dumber then, and I seriously was lucky not to come outta there a quad. Got the six inch scar on top of my head to prove it. 😃

  10. Happy Anniversary to you early. And yes, to be honest, your name is what inspired me to follow you in the first place. Your work is super cheery. 🙂 Also, kudos to your autistic son. I have Asperger’s Syndrome, so I guess I can relate to him to a point.

    • Truthfully, he’s closer to Aspergers than Autistic. He’s quite the inspiration to us. Thanks for following and reading my nonsense. Super cheery? I’m not usually described that way, but I like it. 😃

  11. Geez! Almost got yourself paralyzed!

  14. I so knew you’d choose Summer. How close were you paralysis? What was bungee jumping like?

    Liked by 1 person

    • It could be Summer all year as far as I’m concerned. I make it sound more dramatic than it was. My hard head likely cracked the bottom of the pool. But when I described to the doc what had happened, he was amazed I wasn’t paralyzed from a cervical compression fracture. It was 3 ft of water, I thought it was 5 ft. Landed directly on the crown of my skull. I was conscious the whole time but stunned and dazed. Bungee jumping? It was crazy fun. The scariest part was when I was the next one up and had to wait for my friend to go. And the bounce back after the initial fall is kinda weird to, gave me more vertigo than standing at he edge of the platform.

  15. Great job answering all the questions! 🙂
