Talk Derby To Me

Here in kentucky, we have to fight our share of truths, and misconceptions, and we are often made the butt of jokes.  Some is deserved, most is overkill, and tired.  Like EVERY state in the Union, there is good and there is bad.  But, I will say this: our little corner of the world is a special place, and, despite the slurs and misconceptions bantered about by others about us, we still offer any and all visitors  unmatched hospitality.  We know how to throw a party, and all are invited.  And the past two weeks in general, and yesterday and today, in particular?  It’s our time to shine.

The best part, for me, is the number of musical acts that make their way through here around Derby time, and this year has been banner.  But there’s a little something for everyone.  So whatever your taste, flavor, or poison, we got ya’ covered.

If you haven’t attended a Derby yet:

and worn a crazy hat:

tried a Mint Julep (which most of us natives do not drink by the way):

passed out in the infield:

been pitied by the police…while passed out in the infield:

or done other odd and potentially dangerous shit in the infield, like:

then you probably should, at some point, try to make it.  It’s quite the spectacle.

Whether you watch from the Paddock, The Grandstand, Millionnaires Row, the infield (my personal favorite, and I recommend The Third Turn area), or the stables, you’re guaranteed to have a couple of days you’ll talk about for years.

And if youre in some other corner of the world, but celebrating with us, enjoy!  We’ll make all y’all honorary Kentuckians today.  And just you try not get goosebumps when my University of Louisville Cardinal band plays “My Old Kentucky Home” and the crowd of 150,000 roars as they approach the starting gate.

Happy Derby Day, y’all!  😃🌹🐎

  5. Great! Did you have money placed on any horse? I picked Whitmore because he bucked right before the gate, and I like long shots. My system is flawed but that’s the fun of Derby Day!

    • It’s all pomp and circumstance in the Grandstand. Hats, cigars, seersucker suits. But the infield? Whole other animal out there. Told someone earlier, attendance was 167,000, but there were only 14 arrests. It’s pretty much live and let live out there too. 😃
