Why, Thank You!

I have another round of Thank You to send out.  This time it’s sent to Jessica at Not The Average Mama.  She’s nominated me for the:

She has a very interesting site, discussing her world as a step-parent, and co-parenting with her husband’s ex-wife, and mom to her step-kids.  I’m tellin’ y’all, if you were/are a step-kid, the way they manage this dynamic is how we all should/should have been lucky enough to experience.  Check her out, you won’t regret it.

As always, there are some rules:

The rules:

1. Thank the person who nominated you.

2. Answer the questions from the person who nominated you.

3. Nominate other bloggers for this award.

4. Write the same amount of questions for the bloggers you have nominated.

5. Notify the bloggers you have nominated.

Here are the questions posed to me:

What is your zodiac sign and does it fit your personality?

I’m a Sagiterrean, born on November 26:

Save the extrovert part, except when imbibing or with people I know well, this is actually pretty accurate.

What blog is your favorite to read and why?

There are way too many that truly speak to me to choose just one.  And, they connect with different sides of me.  The funny ones, the naughty ones, the photography ones, the music ones, etc.   They all feed a portion of my soul.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Taking a kayak with me to work and then hitting the lake on the way home. I feel guilty about it sometimes though.  Once I became a dad, I vowed to always be “present”.  For everything.  Including being there for the boys every afternoon.  Getting homework done, starting dinner, talking about their days.  When I don’t come straight home, I feel like I’m missing out.  May be irrational, but as a former latchkey kid, I stick to my vow.  My wife nearly had to insist that I do this every now and then.

The peace, solitude, and being on water are essential to me, and my sanity.

What is your earliest memory and how old were you?

Being at my paternal grandparents’ camp at a lake here in my state.  Campfires, fishing, catching crawfish, cooking and eating outside.  I guess I was around 3-4.  To this day, I love camping and being on, in, or near water.

What is the worst present you ever got?

Can’t really think of any, actually.  I’ve been with my wife for more than half my life, and she’s a fantastic gift giver.  Especially for birthdays.  She’s big on making sure everybody has “their” day of celebtation, and she always make it special.  If I had to pick something though, I’d say getting socks and/or underwear for Christmas as a kid.  That was always a letdown.

Three things you love about you and/or your life?

Easy: my wife, my boys,

and my handful of closest friends.

Quick, what’s on your right?

One of my twin boys, who is mesmerized by an episode of River Monsters (I wrote this up last night).

What did you start blogging?

I started just after Father’s Day last year, in response to some issues about my dad.  It’s morphed into I don’t what exactly, but I keep on keepin’ on with it.  I think it’s primarily nonsense, but people come around, for some reason.

Have you ever met anybody famous?

I have, a couple times, but I’d say my most glorious brush with fame is Muhammed Ali.  He used to frequent the restaraunt I worked at while in college.  I finally worked up the nerve to ask for his autograph and he was fantastic.  Got it on a bar napkin, but it went the way of the wind at some point.

What is your favorite holiday tradition?

Well, pre-kids, it was always the weekend after Thanksgiving, when we would do our decorations.  As a couple, we still do, and really do enjoy it.  It sets the mood for the season and completely changes the vibe of the house.

Now, with the boys, I love Christmas morning.  Their faces and pure excitement is contagious…even at 6:00am.

We have made it a priority to be home for Christmas morning every year since they were born.

There ya’ have it.  Thanks again, Jessica!  I really appreciate the nod.  Please go check her site out.  It’s fantastic!  As per my usual tradition, I nominate all of you terrific peeps who may read this.  Please feel free to play along if you’d like.  I’d love to see y’all’s answers.

My songs of the day are:

“I’m Leaving You For Solitude” by Manic Street Preachers

“Old Man” by Neil Young

“”The Life You Chose” by Jason Isbell

“Future People” by Alabama Shakes

“Shy Boy” by J.D. McPherson

“I Think She Likes Me” by Treat Her Right

“Crave” by Gabe Dixon

“Pedestrian At Best” by Courtney Barnett

    • I’m so sorry to hear that. I know how my wife felt after her mom died. It was rough on us all, but especially her. It 6 years in January. It gets a little easier as time passes. My thoughts are with you today though. 😕
