This week’s Share Your World from Cee’s Photography is a special Favorite Holiday edition.

This is what Cee had to say about this week’s prompt:

“This is a special holiday edition. The questions have to do with your favorite holiday you celebrate during the year Christmas, birthday, New Year, Hanukkah, Diwali. Since our international blogs are great for teaching us traditions from around the world, I adore reading about other cultures traditions. I really encourage everyone to join in the fun.”

Here are Cee’s questions for the week:

What is your favorite holiday?

I’ve always been partial to Halloween as my favorite “holiday”.  It’s just all about fun, and being spooked and creeped out is fun.  And, candy.  Lots of candy.  The parties, the shenanigans, the pranks.  Fun, plain and simple.

That is, until I had kids.  Halloween is still great, but, Christmas is currently my favorite, and that’s all because of them.  Well, while they all believed in the magic, at least.  They don’t now, but those years of watching them and their wonderment at it all are my best holiday memories. Now that they just give us a list, it’s lost some of that luster, but it’s still fun having young kids at Christmas time.

What types of food is associated with your holiday?

The usual.  Lots and lots of treats, my faves being bourbon balls, cherry cobbler, and pineapple upside down cake.  Candies, cookies, cakes, oh my.

Then the parties and pot lucks, nights out, dinners with friends.  And on Christmas Day, a big meal, of course.  Usually a pork loin, a brisket, or a roast, or even a lasagna or meatloaf.  No turkey, maybe a ham.  Assorted sides.  And desserts.  Oh, the desserts.

The drinks of choice are a fluid situation, no pun intended.  But, rest assured, there’s a Guiness…or a few, and Woodford Reserve involved.

Do you travel for your holiday?

Not usually, again, since having kids.  Other than the odd trip to Florida or to the mountains, we’ve insisted on our kids waking up to Christmas morning at home, from their own beds.

Is it a religious or spiritual holiday?

When I was a kid, and my grandparents were alive, yes.  I attended my fair share of Christmas Eve midnight candlelit masses as a youngster.  My parents were hippies, not church goers, but even they were expected to show for Christmas services.

We aren’t church goers ourselves, so no, it isn’t a “religious” thing for us, though we have taught the boys about what Christmas truly means, who and what is the real reason for the season.

Is there a gift exchange?

Of course…although, I’m sad to say, we no longer have “believers”.  That’s taken some of the shine off, but I still love seeing their faces on Christmas morning.

How long does the celebration last?

Well, the actual Christmas dinner, family, presents, etc. is just one day.  But, between recitals and breakfasts at school, parties and lights displays, it lasts about a month taken as a whole.

Optional Bonus question: What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

From last week, I’m grateful to have spent a good amount of time with friends.  We’re all busy, and some live away now, but we always reunite as a group a couple times during the holiday’s.  And it’s terrific to be in the same room again.

As for next week, I’ve got Monday off, and Thursday and Friday too!  Huge flea market in town, no work, a big basketball game against the Hoosiers and a bowl game against LSU, both on New Year’s Eve, for my Cards.  What’s not to look forward to?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all y’all fantastic people.
