Weekly Photo Challenge: Favorite Place

This week’s Weekly Photo Challenge from The Daily Post is for the topic:

Here’s my take on it:

I have a difficult time picking just one favorite place.  So, here are just a few of the places that are near and dear to me, and places that we frequent….well, frequently:

Chicago is definitely a favorite, for various reasons, but primarily because it’s where I first asked my wife out on a date, and eventually proposed to her.  We are up there at least 3 times a year to visit one of my best friends or to see a game at Wrigley.  As cities go, it’s one of the best in the world:

St. George Island is a hidden gem on the Gulf coast, and its isolation and lack of crowds is ideal, and right across the bay from Apalachicola, which is also a favorite, and where my wife’s dad and step-mom live:

New Orleans is my favorite city.  It’s unique, and gets into your blood if one spends any significant time there.  The people are amazing, the food, the music, the fun.   What’s  not to love?:

Our home.  Living out in the middle of nowhere isn’t for everyone, and not how I grew up.  But I love it, it’s my sanctuary away from this batshit crazy world, and once I pass through that gate, that crazy world disappears:

Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina is my  favorite place for hiking and backcountry camping.  If you enjoy roughing it like I do, doesn’t get much better than here.  Keep an eye out for bears though:

Ocracoke Island?  Oh my.  My love affair with this little island in the Outer Banks began when I was 5 or 6 years old, and continues to this day.  It’s roughly 12 miles of pristine and untouched beach with no buildings built on the shore at all…zero…no houses, no ugly and obstructive high-rise condos, no nothing, because it is protected seashore.  It has powdery sand, amazing dunes, killer surfing, it’s not easy to get to, and most people have never even heard of it.  And that’s just the way we like it.  It’s perfect.  And it’s where we will retire to…ASAP!:

And, no matter where we are in the world, as long as I’m with this crew, I’m in my favorite place:

My songs of the day are:

“Favorite” by Neko Case

“This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)” by Talking Heads

“My Favorite Song” by Ryan Adams

“A Place In The Sun” by Stevie Wonder

“My Favorite Wine Is Tequila” by Michael Franti & Spearhead

“Looking For A Place To Happen” by The Tragically Hip

“All Your Favorite Bands” by Dawes

“I Know A Place” by John Hiatt

  1. Wonderful family and beautiful pictures. I’d like that away from it all home myself! 🙂

  2. I looooved Chicago! We visited a couple of years back when my brother, my boyfriend and I went on a roadtrip… We stayed at the Congress Plaza Hotel (because it is said to be haunted, and we thought it was funny) and stayed there for a couple of days… Definately my favorite US city! I’d go back anytime… But New York will be next, we’re going for a show in October… Yay!

    • I couldn’t pick a favorite place, I don’t think. But these are a fair representation, I suppose. The last one is the key though. So long as they’re with me, I’m good wherever. 😃

  5. All of your musical choices here are so mood lifting! The places you showed seemed to fill all the areas I love, too; beach, water, colorful, calm and nature on display.
You are really blessed to have this sanctuary for home. 💙
