It’s been a rough couple of days here in the sonofabeach household.  Our beloved dog, Coco, had taken a drastic turn in her health over the weekend, and it came to a head this morning.  She suddenly wasn’t eating, drinking, and was having abnormally labored breathing, beginning on Saturday.  This morning, she was worse.  Much worse.  And as much as we want to take any and all measures possible to keep her here with us, our vet assures us that this was the best decision.  Watching her struggle and suffer over the past 3 days has been hard on all of us.  And, though she’ll be missed terribly, allowing her to continue to suffer was not an option.  She was put to sleep this afternoon.

We loved her very much, even though she was only ours for the last 4 years.  She was originally brought to KY via New Orleans, after Hurricane Katrina, by our local Humane Society.  Oddly enough, we adopted a dog from that same batch of animals back in 2005.  Her name was Bayou.

She was such a good girl, and when we lost her in 2014, we were soon afterwards gifted the chance to adopt another former Katrina dog, Coco.

She had a great last few years with us, chasing cats daily, getting copious hugs and cuddles and treats, travelled with us, played in the ocean, and was given acres of roaming room.  Though we feel blessed to have had her in our lives, it’s still so hard to say goodbye.  And she will be missed something fierce.

R.I.P.  my dear Coco.  😔😔

  6. Hard to push a like on this one. I’ve had the same experience a few times. It is very difficult. I still get all upset thinking of them. I can’t have a pet now, but would love a huge big furry dog. I know it’s tough, but good wishes to you all.🤗

  7. Oh man, I am so sorry! I’ve had to make this painful decision with some beloved pets myself, and know how it feels like a knife to the heart. It’s so tough letting them go, even when we know it’s the right thing to do for them. My sincere condolences to your and your family.

    • Thanks so much. We’ve had to do it before as well. Still sucks as bad as it did before. Even though it’s the right thing to do, I think, it’s one of the hardest things to be part of. 😕

    • Thanks, Doc. Yeah, she was terrific. Wish we’d have had her longer. But, she gave us a lot of joy in the short time we had her. Yesterday pretty much sucked. 😕

      • I totally get it. It’s been just a month since we lost Jay Dog. I miss him so much. I still expect him to be in his usual spots and I hear his nails on the wood floors in my imagination. I’m so very sorry. 😞

      • It sucks, doesn’t it? It’s funny you mentioned the clicking of his nails on the floor. We both swore we heard hers on the kitchen floor last night. 😔

  20. Owwww. That’s a hard one. Those 4 legged children capture our hearts and are hard to let go. So sorry for your loss my friend.

    • Thanks so much. Yeah, yesterday was pretty much a shitty day. I didn’t want to see her suffer, but I hate the feeling of being responsible for her death. It’s quite emotionally confusing. 😔

      • Indeed. It’s a hard line to walk. But you can’t let them suffer. When we put our 16 year old blue heeler to sleep, my husband was so emotional he had the whole vets office crying with him. We were just wrecked for about a week after.

      • Yep. That was us yesterday, and likely will be for some time. My boys were a wreck too. They helped me with her grave yesterday, and you should have seen the 4 of us, blathering and sniffling like babies. 😕

  21. I’m so very sorry to hear. I’m glad, however, that you took the compassionate road and didn’t keep her going for yourselves, but thought of her and her suffering first. It’s never easy to lose our ‘angels with fur’, but for me and people like myself? They’ll be waiting for us when it’s our turn to go. My condolences.

    • Thank you. I trust that we made the right call, and lots of y’all have confirmed that here. Sure doesn’t make it any easier to do though. I agree that she’ll be waiting for us, along with all the others that have been part of our lives over the years. 😊

  22. So sorry to read this. I know it’s not the right solution, but honestly, this kind of loss is one of the reasons I have no pets (at least not right now… but I have in the past). Sending hugs. ♥

    • Thank you. I see why you’d want to avoid this scenario. It’s heart wrenching to be face to face and looking in her eyes as it happens. But she wasn’t suffering any longer. Yeah, it’s shitty, and an awful thing to happen. But the time we had her, running cats up trees, begging for treats every time she came inside, chasing seagulls on the beach, etc., etc., was priceless. I suppose everything in life is a trade-off. 😊

  25. I’m so sorry to hear this. I hope you and your family are doing ok and take pride and joy in all the wonderful memories with her. I also find it a wonderful coincidence that’s she’s the same name as the lovely movie, Coco. (Have you watched it?) Seems fitting. Big hug to you guys.

  27. I’m so so sorry to hear about the loss of Bayou 💐💐. I feel you; we lost our beloved 15.5-year-old fur-kid this spring. I can’t think of anything harder. My thoughts are with you and my arms around you, dear one 💞💞

  30. I’m so sorry for your and you family’s loss. A pet is a part of the family and their deaths hurts just as much as if it was a person. I’m in the same situation right now with my 16yr old cat. She’s on special food and oils to keep her going, but rheumatism and old age has set in.

    • Thanks. I’m sorry to hear about your fur baby. It’s never easy, and they certainly are a big part of the family. Losing one is the only bad thing about having a pet. 😕
